Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is a type of quality control of parts and pieces of technological equipment. It uses sophisticated technology to penetrate metal or concrete surface and identify defects without compromising the integrity of the structure.
An example of NDT is performing of the ultrasonic testing on welded pipe in order to identify cracks that could lead to leaks.
Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is applied for the detection and the assessment of violations in the integrity of the materials. Impaired integrity of the material may affect the suitability of the material or its structure.
NDT is used to detect surface defects invisible to the human eye and hidden internal defects in the details.
The main methods for nondestructive testing are:
- Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) (color and luminescent)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Gamma and X-ray Radiography Testing (RT)
The Non-destructive Testing (NDT) is important to ensure the safe operation of any equipment. Defects can be cracks, inclusions in welds and castings, variations in the structure of the materials. These defects can lead to damage to the machine and stand. The main feature of the NDT is that the process of testing does not cause harmful effects on the tested material or structure.
